I have had another experience of fate, supernatural timing.  No matter how my choices went, nothing could change this beautiful experience.

I was on call, sent to a home to admit a client late in the afternoon and a bit frustrated with the failures of the health care system.  After the patient struggled to get inside the house and we could look each other in the eyes, my meeting with fate was realized.  This hospice patient was a friend from college days.

It was clear to me her life on earth was nearing its end, quickly.  Yet, the eye contact and unspoken interaction of friends from days gone by took us right back to where we ended 24 years earlier. Friends…

We talked briefly of a couple shared memories and then the reality of her illness over ruled.  Her voice was only a whisper and her every intention took more energy than she had available.

Hours later I was back in her home and confirming her nearness to death.  She squeezed a hand, tried to physically move and then she died in the arms of her husband.  A face to face sharing of life and of death.

Fate and supernatural timing is a humbling experience.  There is no way man can coordinate the care of a hospice client, a reunion of friends and of-course the stunning privilege to be in her inner circle as she went from life to death.  All within 20 hours!

Reality…intamacy…grief…honor…impact!  I was wishing for more of her and yet deeply celebrating the beautiful gift of our reunion, of being her nurse at this time, at this moment, at this critical part of her life.

Freedom to her,
